 April 11: Wesleyan Community Archaeological Fieldwork Day!

The Archaeology Program would like to invite you to a small-scale archaeological survey and excavation that will take place on campus on Saturday, April 11 from 9am-3pm. The fieldwork will be led by Prof. Kate Birney (Classical Studies and Archaeology Program) and by local historical archaeologist Dr. David Naumec. Prof. Jayson Gill (Archaeology Program) will also be helping to map the site. The fieldwork is part of a Mellon grant funded course that I am co-teaching with Prof. Jennifer Tucker (History) titled History and Archaeology of Industrial Connecticut.
We will be excavating in the grassy area behind Downey House at 294 High Street. Our goal is to investigate building features associated with the Nathan Starr Jr. House at 276 High Street, which was built in 1831. The Starr family has a long history in Middletown where they manufactured rifles, sabers, and agricultural tools.

April 23: Mammoth Hunt with Atlatls!

Dear Wesleyan community,
We would like to invite you to our annual Mammoth Hunt with Atlatls on the afternoon of Thursday, April 23. The event will take place on the athletic practice field just north of Long Lane farm. You can sign up for a 45-minute session using the QR codes or links below (start times are 4:30pm, 5:15pm, and 6:00pm). Participants will have a chance to throw darts using a spear-throwing tool called an atlatl. Hit the target and win a stuffed mammoth toy! 
All Wesleyan community members and their families are welcome to take part (children are welcome with parental supervision). The event is co-sponsored by the Archaeology & Anthropology Collections, Wesleyan University Library, Archaeology Program, and Environmental Archaeology Lab. Thank you to the Athletics Office for letting us use the Long Land practice field.
