The Origins of Art and Music: The Archaeological Record
Prof. Dr. Nicholas J. Conard
Director of the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology and founding Director of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences, University of Tübingen, Germany
This lecture draws on recent excavations in South Africa, East Africa, the Near East, and Europe to examine the origins of art, figurative representation, and musical traditions. New data on early examples of art and musical instruments from UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Swabian Alps will be presented. In his lecture Prof. Dr. Conard will report on over twenty years of excavation at these magnificent sites and will examine the contexts and evolution of early artistic and musical traditions.
