How do students transfer credits to Wesleyan for studio art courses taken at other U.S. academic institutions or while studying abroad?

There are two types of Art Studio transfer credit:

  • Courses that can be applied to Art Studio major requirements
  • Courses that can be applied for general graduation credit

All ARST transfer credits must ultimately be approved by the Art Studio program director.

TRANSFER CREDIT FOR STUDY ABROAD

Study Abroad Credit for Studio Art courses (General Graduation Credit)

To receive general graduation credit for studio art courses taken abroad:

  • Begin by meeting with the Office of Study Abroad and submitting the online transfer credit application.
  • Submit an online course request, which will be reviewed by the Art Studio program director.
  • Your submission must include:
    • Links to course descriptions and syllabi
    • Total in-class contact hours and expectations for work outside of class
    • All documents must be in English
  • The program director will determine if the course qualifies for general graduation credit in studio art.

Study Abroad Credit for Studio Art courses (applied to Art Studio major)

Part 1: Pre-Approval Required

To receive credit toward the Art Studio major for studio art or art history courses taken abroad, you must obtain pre-approval before traveling.

  • Meet with your advisor before contacting the Office of Study Abroad to begin the credit transfer process.
  • Submit an online course request, which will be reviewed by the Art Studio program director.
  • Your submission must include:
    • Course description
    • Course syllabus
    • Total in-class contact hours and expectations for work outside of class
    • All documents must be in English
  • The program director will forward your request to the media appropriate Art Studio faculty member to determine if the course is equivalent to a Wesleyan ARST course and can be provisionally approved for major credit.

Part 2: Portfolio Review

After returning from study abroad:

  • Students must present a portfolio of work completed in the course to the same faculty member who provisionally approved it.
  • The faculty member will assess whether the work meets Wesleyan’s standards for an equivalent Art Studio course.
  • If approved, the program director will finalize the course for major credit.
  • For any ARHA (Art History) courses requested for Art Studio major credit, the program director will make the final decision and approve or deny the submission.

*Wesleyan students who wish to transfer course credit toward the Art Studio major should note that approval is not automatic, even for courses from a Wesleyan-approved program. Students may apply a maximum of three combined ARST and ARHA courses taken outside Wesleyan toward the major, but only with specific permission from the Art Studio faculty.
