The College of Design & Engineering Studies (CoDES) at Wesleyan University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Engineering and Applied Science. The position begins July 1, 2024. We are searching for candidates with equal enthusiasm for innovative approaches to engineering education and for developing an independent research program that will be accessible to undergraduates.

The successful candidate will contribute to the growth of a newly established major in Design & Engineering. We are open to engineers from a range of fields, and we place a priority on candidates with a background in mechanical, civil, or electrical engineering. Candidates should consider how their research could create synergy with the Integrated Design, Engineering, Arts & Society (IDEAS) major hosted by the college, as well as other programs on campus. The successful applicant will possess a strong ability to work with individuals and student teams in project-based courses. In introductory courses, some students come from art and design backgrounds, so the ability to effectively teach students with varying skill sets is required. Special consideration will be given to candidates with postdoctoral research experience in engineering or a related field, and/or with project-based or lab teaching experience.

Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts institution that values both scholarship and teaching, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers competitive salaries and benefits. The position offers a unique opportunity to thrive at a leading liberal arts university, providing significant institutional support in the form of start-up funds, a three course per year teaching load, and dedicated laboratory space for faculty research. The IDEAS Lab makerspace features a wide range of rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing tools that are incorporated in project development, available both for teaching and research work. In addition, substantial machine shop, analytical instrumentation, and computational resources are available. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. Collegial faculty interactions include career mentoring, participation in pedagogical innovation, and a shared commitment to the promotion of inclusion and diversity.

A complete application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publications, a statement of research plans, a statement of teaching interests, course syllabi and teaching evaluations (if available), and email addresses for three referees from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation. In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the college's commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups. Applications should be submitted online at https://careers.wesleyan.edu/postings/10067

Applications submitted by December 1, 2023 will be given full consideration. Please contact Stefanie Dineen by email (sdineen@wesleyan.edu) or phone at 860-685-2130 if you have any questions about the application process.
