Speaking in Colors & Shapes: American modernist painters

Modernist painting

A companion course to Richard Voigt’s “American Realist Painters,” this course will offer a bridge between realism and later post-WW II movements, particularly abstract expressionism and pop art. While many began as realist painters, the modernists discovered that by altering picture planes, vantage points, and colors, they came up with a bold new style and a body of work that has kept its appeal to this day. Painters considered in this course will include Georgia O’Keefe, Stuart Davis, Jacob Lawrence, and Milton Avery, as well as lesser-known painters such as Francis Criss, Ernest Crichlow, Stanton MacDonald-Wright, and Alice Neel. The course will explore how the innovative spirit and creative determination of modernist painters made an essential contribution to a changing American artistic identity.
