This course follows the instructor’s previous courses on American realist painters and American modernist painters. Pop art challenged the distinction between fine art and commercial art—indeed, challenged the distinction between art and non-art. Pop art broke through the theoretical constraints of Abstract Expressionism, embracing America’s popular mass culture. It rejected existing ideas of art’s proper subject matter and aesthetics. We will examine the works of both well-known artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Robert Indiana, Claes Oldenburg, Larry Rivers, Robert Rauschenberg, Wayne Thiebald, and Peter Max, as well as those of some lesser-known artists, including Marjorie Strider, Rosalyn Drexler, and Jann Haworth. We will explore the “WOW” and “POP” in Pop art and ask why Pop art continues to influence American culture.
