Baroque Art: An imperfect pearl by any other name

fruit stilllife

Baroque art in 17th-century Europe displays a variety of styles, the differences depending largely on location. The first part of our course will begin in Italy with Bernini: his completion of Saint Peter’s in Rome and his dramatic sculptures of David and Saint Theresa, all created in the context of the Counter-Reformation. The innovations in paintings by Caravaggio will receive special attention, along with works by the first fully recognized woman painter, Artemisia Gentileschi. Moving to Spain, we will explore the art of Diego Velázquez, in particular the unique features of his famous work Las Meninas (The Ladies in Waiting).
