How to obtain course transfer credit for Study Abroad or Courses Taken at Other Institutions 

Please note that all course transfer credit approvals described below must be obtained prior to departure for Study Abroad or prior to enrolling in a non-Wesleyan course. The course approval form should be accompanied by the relevant course documentation that includes the following: the syllabus, detailed course description, textbook or course readings utilized (if known), class hours, and grading metrics. This documentation can be conveyed as a pdf file or webpage link. See the Office of Study Abroad webpage for additional details on tranferring study abroad credits or the Student Affairs webpage for resources on transferring credits from another institution. 

  • Study Abroad for a semester or year: course credit towards graduation is automatic for most liberal arts courses taken abroad in fields taught at Wesleyan when students apply through Wesleyan.  
  • Study Abroad during the summer or winter: Students must receive departmental approval for all courses taken abroad during summer or winter terms for graduation credit to transfer back to Wesleyan. Send your course approval form with course documentation to the chair of the relevant department for approval. 
  • Credit for non-liberal arts courses (e.g., business, law, medicine, etc.): Students must receive course approval from the chair of the closest Wesleyan department. Send your course approval form with course documentation to the chair of the relevant department for approval. Your advisor can help you with this determination, if needed. 

How to receive MB&B major credit for Study Abroad courses:  

  • For major-required foundational courses (such as introductory chemistry or physics, organic chemistry, mathematics or statistics): Send your course approval form with course documentation for approval to the chair of the department which hosts the course. These courses need to be taken for a letter grade or equivalent. 
  • For substitute MB&B major courses: Send your course approval form with course documentation to the MB&B chair for approval. These courses need to be taken for a letter grade or equivalent and a grade of C- or higher must be achieved to obtain major credit.
