  • What should the essay include/ be about?
    The essay should demonstrate why you want to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry. What sorts of chemistry do you find interesting? Why Wesleyan?
  • What are the application requirements?
    • Students wishing to apply for the Ph.D. program in Chemistry must hold at least a Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution with a major in chemistry or in a closely related discipline.

        • Applicants may upload an unofficial copy for review.

        • The application moves on before the official transcripts are received so they can be evaluated by the faculty, however the offer of admission is dependent on receipt of the official transcript.
      • Official copies of TOEFL/IELTS/DUOLINGO scores for applicants whose primary language is other than English.
        • Applicants may upload an unofficial copy for review.
        • TOEFL scores should be sent to code 3959. 
        • Language proficiency scores will not be necessary if you have already received an undergraduate or master’s degree in Chemistry at a US institution, or from a university in which the primary language of instruction is English.

  • What is the minimum TOEFL score for graduate admission? Can anything be substituted for the TOEFL?
    • There is no minimum required score.
    • The TOEFL exam is preferable but any objective evidence of English proficiency may be acceptable.
      • Our on-line application, Slate, does not accept electronic IELTS scores.  
        IELTS scores may be used to satisfy the test score requirement for international students. 
        Students must self-report their scores or the upcoming test date on the application. 
        Graduate Student Affairs will forward the paper reports to the Chemistry department.
      • Applicants may upload the TOEFL unofficial copy and should have the official copy mailed to us.
        • TOEFL scores should be sent to code 3959.

  • Are there GPA requirements?
    There are no GPA requirements.
  • What are the minimum GRE scores for admission?
    GRE (Graduate Record Exam) scores are NOT required.
  • Do you offer admission to students for the spring semester?
    Rarely. As opportunities arise throughout the academic year, additional applications may be evaluated. Please inquire with the department.
  • What is the application deadline for Fall admission?
    January 5th of each year. Submit as early as possible for the best chance of admission.
    • Please note that most applications are submitted in December.
    • Applications are reviewed soon after the deadline and applicants may be notified sometime in February through mid-May.  
  • Are teaching assistantships offered?
    Yes. All students are supported, either as teaching or research assistants.
  • What is the application fee?
    There is no application fee.
  • Do you contact my recommenders or do I?
    You do. We do not follow up with the faculty you list on your application. It is your responsibility to make sure everything is received by the department.
  • Where is the form to send to my recommenders?
    There is no standardized form. You can request a letter from your recommenders when you register with Slate, our online application management system. They can then upload their recommendation form on the Slate website. If they are unable to do this, a letter of recommendation can be sent via e-mail or by mail. Please make note that letters should come from a work or school email address.
