Chemistry Placement Information

Depending on their background, students in chemistry may choose between three options to begin their studies:

  1. General Chemistry I & II (CHEM141/142): This year-long sequence covers the standard general chemistry curriculum required for science majors and premedical studies. High school mathematics through precalculus is required.
  2. Honors General Chemistry (CHEM145): This one-semester course is designed for students with advanced academic preparation who would like to complete the general chemistry requirements for science majors and/or premedical studies in only one semester. The curriculum of this course is a survey of major topics in general chemistry covered in depth; it is not a two-semester course compressed into one semester.
  3. Organic Chemistry I & II (CHEM251/252): Students who have satisfactorily completed college-level general chemistry may use advanced placement to enroll directly into the organic chemistry sequence.
Incoming students and their advisors are recommended to use this Chemistry Placement Questionnaire to help determine the most appropriate placement option.

Advanced Placement

Students who are eligible for prematriculation credit in chemistry by examination (AP, IB-HL, etc.) will not receive credit for completing the CHEM141/142 sequence and must select one of the other two placement options. To determine whether this policy applies to you, please review the Advanced Placement Guidelines for chemistry.
