AP/IB/A-Level Guidelines
For New Students Beginning Fall 2024:
Students with any of the following examination scores will automatically receive 1.0 prematriculation credit in chemistry:
- AP Chemistry 4 or 5
- IB-HL Chemistry 5, 6, or 7
- Cambridge A-Level Chemistry grade of A
This prematriculation credit can be used in place of CHEM141, 142, and the 141L/142L lab courses for any major/minor program and/or as a prerequisite for another course. Students who are eligible for this credit may not receive credit for completing CHEM141 or 142; however, they may choose to complete Honors General Chemistry (CHEM145) for credit. Any student who chooses to enroll in CHEM145 after receiving prematriculation credit in chemistry may also enroll in the General Chemistry Laboratory sequence (CHEM 141L/142L) for credit.
For students who entered Wesleyan prior to Fall 2024:
Students who matriculated prior to Fall 2024 may request prematriculation credit if they have one of the exam scores listed above and have completed either CHEM144 (for 1.0 credit) or CHEM251 (for 2.0 credits) as a first chemistry course at Wesleyan and earned a B- or better. Any undergraduate student for which this policy applies may petition the chemistry department to receive 1.0 credit without the required coursework, in a manner equivalent to the new policy. Petitions should be sent by email to chemistry@wesleyan.edu.
