The Physics Graduate Program

Wesleyan University is a highly selective liberal arts university located in central Connecticut. The student body consists of about 3000 undergraduates and 150 graduate students in Ph.D. programs in the sciences. Active Ph.D. programs in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and in Physics demonstrate Wesleyan's strong commitment to research as a means of maintaining the highest quality faculty for the benefit of both the graduate and undergraduate science education. The quality of the liberal education at Wesleyan attracts many of the brightest students in the country and the presence of competitive graduate research makes Wesleyan a unique opportunity for graduate study.

Our department provides an educational opportunity for students who are seeking a close working relationship with faculty and fellow students. With 9 faculty and 12-15 graduate students, the environment is supportive, without the pressures found in large, anonymous departments.

We have concentrated our research efforts in three broad fields: atomic and molecular physics (experimental), condensed matter physics (experimental) and nonlinear dynamics/chaos/computational physics (theory). Within these areas, we have small groups studying cutting-edge problems within a stimulating collegial environment. Our focused Ph.D. program is tailored to the individual and is designed to allow graduate students early involvement in research with a faculty member.

Please check out our department.  There is no application fee. We strongly recommend students submit GRE general test scores. Admission without GRE scores is possible for truly exceptional cases. GRE Physics scores are also recommended, but not required. For non-native English speakers, we expect a minimum TOEFL score of: 80 (internet-based), 213 (computer-based), or 550 (paper-based). Other evidence of English fluency can be considered.

All admitted students are offered tuition remission and a stipend to cover living expenses.

Please check out our department. We are currently seeking applicants for the Fall of 2011; the application deadline is January 31. Please use our on-line application.
