MELINA AGUILAR
|
HOMETOWN:
|
Ponce, Puerto
Rico |
HIGH SCHOOL:
|
Caribbean
School |
MAJOR:
|
College of Social Science (CSS) |
THESIS:
|
Latin American
Economic Relations with China. |
ACTIVITIES:
|
I have been a
Resident Advisor on campus.
I am the coordinator of the
Office of Community Service
(OCS) Elderly programs, working
with the Middletown Senior
Citizens and Wesleyan community.
I am currently working on a new
OCS program called Wesleyan
Language Bank. I have
tutored Middletown
elementary school children and
assisted in a Spanish
Service Learning course.
I am a member of
Ajua Campos and other
cultural groups on campus. |
OUTSIDE
WESLEYAN:
|
I was a fellow
in the Congressional Hispanic
Leadership Institute in
Washington, DC,
interning for Congressman
Luis Fortuno (now the governor
of Puerto Rico). In the Fall of
'08, I worked in the Progressive
Think Tank: Center for the
American Progress. I became very
interested in Latin American
affairs and the situation for
minorities in the U.S., recently
doing independent research on
both these two issues. I
volunteered in the George
Washington University Global
Language Network, a free
language program, where I taught
Spanish. I also traveled
to China and taught English to
elementary school children. |
AFTER
WESLEYAN:
|
I would like to pursue my
passion for different cultures
and working with youth by either
working or teaching abroad or
working with diverse communities
in the United States. |
FAV WES EXPERIENCE:
|
Exposure to different cultures
while learning more about my own
has been the most enriching
Wesleyan experience as I now
seek to work with cultural
groups and language initiatives. |
