EMILY SCHMIDT
|
HOMETOWN:
|
Chicago, IL |
HIGH SCHOOL:
|
University of
Chicago Laboratory School |
MAJOR:
|
American Studies, with an
Urban
Studies concentration |
THESIS:
|
I am
considering writing a senior
essay bout the Victory Garden
movement sponsored by the U.S.
Government in World War II and
the way it was implemented in
urban environments. |
ACTIVITIES:
|
My favorite
activity has been working on
Long Lane Farm and the bi-weekly
Wesleyan Farmer's Market, both
of which are entirely
student-run. I have worked on a
poetry magazine, been a Spanish
tutor, and volunteered with
Wesleyan students for Barack
Obama. I am also co-leading an
effort to establish an urban
studies concentration
(essentially a minor) in the
Wesleyan curriculum. |
OUTSIDE
WESLEYAN:
|
I spent my
entire junior year in a
architecture and urban history
program in New York and Paris.
My last three summers have been
spent in
internships related to
these fields, most recently in
the urban design department at
Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill in
Chicago. |
AFTER
WESLEYAN:
|
I eventually plan to attend
graduate school for urban design
and landscape architecture. |
FAV WES EXPERIENCE:
|
My sophomore year I lived in a
dorm with thirty-five other
students that was really a
converted Victorian house.
For Halloween we organized a
spectacular haunted house that
hundreds of other students came
to. It was a really great way to
bond with my house and provide a
fun event for the rest of
campus. |
