Power of Language 2021

The 4th Annual Power of Language Conference

April 10, 2021 | Wesleyan University | Zoom & Fisk Hall, 262 High St, Middletown, CT

Seeking presentation and performance submissions on language learning and multilingual living.

The Power of Language Conference seeks to bring awareness to the many benefits of language learning and to promote the study of languages. It creates a forum to share and discuss language experiences and empower culturally sensitive citizens to thrive in the contemporary global environment.

This year’s conference will highlight multilingual initiatives inside and outside of the classroom. We invite Wesleyan students, faculty, alumni, community members, and peers from neighboring institutions to join us in celebrating and reflecting on all aspects of multilingualism in our communities and beyond.

Proposals should address one or more of these themes:

  • Language learning (challenges, methodologies, creative projects, CLAC courses, technologies);
  • Multilingualism (living within multiple languages and cultures, including languages studied formally and informally, at home or in school)
  • Language and society (perception and experience of social and political dynamics/rhetoric through language);
  • Languages studied abroad (language learning in another culture and educational system, as well as experiencing life, politics, and social dynamics in another country);
  • Language as artistic expression (critical reflections, interpretations);
  • Ancient and modern language interactions (translation and reception);
  • Linguistics (topics in phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, computational linguistics);
  • Applied Linguistics (topics in sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, ethnolinguistics, raciolinguistics);
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to languages (language and neuroscience, language and sport, language and art, etc.);
  • Language in a time of isolation (language learning, practice, teaching, use, and challenges under COVID-19, including remote or hybrid modalities, new language in quarantined reality, predictions/reflections of language learning post-pandemic)

We welcome original contributions in the form of an individual proposal or a single proposal on behalf of two presenters. All proposals should clarify the presenters’ approach and format of the presentation or performance. Paper presentations will be limited to 15 minutes with a maximum of two presenters and multilingual creative performances will be limited to 5 minutes. Please include your audiovisual needs with your proposal.

If you wish to participate in the conference, please submit your proposal by February 22, 2021.

Notifications of acceptance will be sent by March 5, 2021.

Thank you,

The 2021 Power of Language organizing committee
