Theme 3. Expand and support a culture of campus multilingualism
The goals we have currently identified as parts of this internationalization theme are listed below. For details on specific activities connected to each goal that have been completed, are underway, or are planned, please see this theme's section of the Internationalization Dashboard.
- 3.1 Further solidify our position as the premier US liberal arts college for language study
- Continue expanding SILPs and CLACs in less-commonly taught languages
- 3.2 Expand and strengthen language-centered and language-integrated curricular initiatives
- Such as: Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum (CLAC); Alternative Language Study Options (SILPs, small courses, LCTLs); Courses with language components (Ukrainian, Swahili)
- 3.3 Expand and strengthen language-centered co-curricular initiatives for the Wesleyan community and beyond
- Increase community-based language learning opportunities and continue supporting existing ones
- Create reading and conversation groups
- Support program houses
- Encourage events in languages other than English
- 3.4 Cultivate and highlight the culture of high professional standards and achievement in the teaching and learning of languages
- Introduce student language proficiency objective testing/certification
- Encourage initiatives/experimentation to enhance language learning/teaching
- Put on workshops in language pedagogy and technology (e.g. ACTFL oral proficiency assessment training)
- 3.5 Increase visibility of and access to multilingualism
- Make languages more visible on campus: Fisk Hall banners and signs, movie captions etc.
- Offer translation services for needed events
