  • May 2022 Status:
    • Conversion of ASL from per-course visitors to full-time Professor of the Practice is nearing completion
    • New Admissions Viewbook highlights language learning strengths
    • New frosh summer “Academic Roadmap” centers language learning
    • FCGS Global Language and Outreach Fellow starts in August
  • Further possibilities:
    • Expand classroom language instruction to an additional language, putting us at #1 in the US with 16 languages (surpassing Wellesley, perhaps by adding Swahili)
    • Convert Portuguese from per-course visitor to full-time Professor of the Practice

Increase community-based language learning opportunities, and support for such initiatives, both curricular and extra-curricular

    • New CLAC course on “Teaching Spanish K-12”
    • Writing Center service-learning courses on TESOL enable students to work with refugees, immigrants, and other community members
  • Further possibilities:
    • Next step is for FCGS staff to consult with Allbritton staff about other opportunities

Encourage and publicize events in languages other than English

  • May 2022 Status: FCGS Global Language and Outreach Fellow starts in August
  • Further possibilities:
    • Ensure that any new calendaring/events system can track and display the language in which any given event will take place (noting with/without subtitles for movies)

Enhance existing language-related curricular and co-curricular opportunities

  • May 2022 Status:
    • FCGS Global Language and Outreach Fellow starts in August
    • Writing Center and academic units have been collaborating on expanding/supporting creative writing beyond English
  • Further possibilities:
    • Encourage collaboration among OEI, OISA, FCGS, and academic units to identify and support needs of student heritage learners of languages
    • Support efforts of Writing Center to combat a narrow “deficit model” for non-native English speakers
