Graduate Application Information

Requirements: an undergraduate music major or its equivalent is required of all applicants to the M.A. program; an M.A. in ethnomusicology or its equivalent for the Ph.D. program. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of transcripts, application essays, letters of reference, writing samples, and an audio or video tape of performances where appropriate. A personal interview (prior to December 15) and GRE scores (general) are highly recommended but not required.

TOEFL/IELTS/DUOLINGO: All applicants who are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents or are a citizen of a country where English is the sole, dominant, or co-official language are not required to submit English Test scores. Applicants who do not fall into this first category, but who have completed or are in the process of completing their undergraduate or master's degree at a U.S. University may submit their unofficial transcript(s) to gradadmissions@wesleyan.edu for consideration of waiving this requirement.

All other applicants must submit official TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test scores by the application deadline in order to be considered for admission. Please submit test scores to demonstrate a proficiency in English sufficient to undertake graduate study. This includes the ability to read, write, and speak English. There is not a minimum required test score. Applicants may enter their unofficial test scores or the date of a scheduled future test on the application; however, an official score from the testing agency is required in order for application review. Therefore, pay careful attention to deadline for the program you are applying to, as the official scores are required by that deadline.
