Prematriculation Credit
At most 4.0 prematriculation credits from college level courses (including dual enrollment courses) and prematriculation tests such as AP and IB tests may be counted toward graduation, and at most 2.0 such credits may be on the basis of prematriculation tests. These credits are not considered for general education equivalency and therefore, will not count towards the General Education Expectations. Prematriculation credit can only be posted before graduating from Wesleyan University.
College-level courses
Up to 4.0 credits total from courses that appear on a college transcript prior to matriculation may be counted toward the BA and BLS degrees. Examples of such courses are
- Courses taken at an accredited U.S. or international institution that are not used toward high school graduation.
- Courses taken through “dual enrollment” programs that are used toward high school graduation requirements, such as Wesleyan’s High School Scholar program and National Education Equity Lab courses.
Any such course must meet the requirements in the Transfer of Credit section in External Special Study Programs.
There is no limit to the number of prematriculation course credits that a student can post to their academic history. However, at most 4.0 prematriculation course credits total may count toward graduation requirements, and at most 4.0 prematriculation course credits may be used for the purpose of class promotion. Students are not permitted to use this credit to reduce the course load below full-time, to replace failing or unsatisfactory grades in classes, or to count toward fulfillment of the general education expectations. No course that is listed for credit on a student’s high school transcript may be used for Wesleyan credit, except in the case of approved college-level courses such as dual enrollment credits.
Use of prematriculation course credits to satisfy course prerequisites or major declaration or completion requirements is at the discretion of the appropriate department.
Advanced Placement Credit, International Baccalaureate Credit, and Other Test Credit
For students entering in or after fall 2025, a student who has completed an Advanced Placement (AP) course or its equivalent while in secondary school and has received a score of 4 or 5 in the corresponding AP examination for which there is an equivalent subject area at Wesleyan may be granted one credit per exam toward the Wesleyan BA degree.
For students entering in or after fall 2025, a student who has completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) course of study and has received a score of 5, 6, or 7 on a corresponding higher-level IB examination for which there is an equivalent subject area at Wesleyan may be granted one credit per exam toward the Wesleyan BA degree.
Students wanting to post any other prematriculation test credit (e.g., A-level, Cambridge International, CAPE, etc.) must consult their class dean. The awarding of these prematriculation test credits is determined in consultation with the relevant department.

Submitting AP and IB Scores
For consideration of AP credits, students must submit their official score report from the College Board. Once AP scores have been received, they will display in WesPortal with the Placement Scores & Recommendations page. Some AP scores may also satisfy pre-requisites for upper-level courses. If a student has met the pre-requisite for a course based on their AP scores, the courses they are eligible for in an upcoming semester will be posted under the Recommendations section of the Placement Scores and Recommendations page. Students will be eligible for the “recommended” courses during the course registration period, with no further action required.
For consideration of IB credits, students must submit their official score report from the International Baccalaureate. For consideration of IB credit as a pre-requisite for Wesleyan coursework, students may submit pre-requisite override requests during the fall or spring pre-registration periods.
